West-European perspective
This course represents the culmination of over a decade of coaching and group training experience from Kick Moors and Hermen Visser. Since 2011, we have collaborated in coaching over 300 researchers from European universities applying for grants at the ERC, NWO (Dutch Research Council), and other funding agencies. Our goal has always been to optimally prepare each candidate. We started coaching from our own Dutch academic context. By learning from candidates from all over the world and by incorporating their experiences of the ERC interviews, we further finetuned the methodology followed by this course. We touch upon universal principles with proven practical value, but our continental West-European perspective remains present. The course is also optimized for interacting with European panels. It is always advisable to be culturally sensitive and aware of differences when navigating this process.
Stay true to yourself
Authenticity and enthusiasm are amongst the defining aspects of a winning interview. Keep that in mind throughout the preparational process. As soon as you receive an invitation for a research grant interview, all sorts of tips and advice from many different people will come your way. However, what did work for a colleague, might be counterproductive for you.
While processing the advice you receive from your professional and personal environment (and the ideas presented in this course) keep yourself in the loop. The choices you make should be yours. The structure of your presentation should be one that enables you to authentically present it. The examples you prepare for your Q+A should make you truly enthusiastic. Do not try to be someone else. If you are shy you are shy. If you are energetic you are energetic. Within certain limits you can learn to present more convincingly, but our most important advice: stay true to yourself.
