The first impression we have of a person counts. In a few seconds we subcontiously judge the other. Do they pose a threat? Are they trustworthy? This is the case in the in-person setting, but also online. If we meet a person wo hides in the shadows because of poor light conditions, our first judgement might be one of distrust.
Thus being clearly visible and audible during the online interview is influencing the panel member’s subcontious judgement about you. It also makes them see your emotions and hear your intentions without noise and distraction. And, if you know you can rely on your preparation you can focus on the interaction with the panel. Thus the advice: set it and forget it.
