What this step is about
The most important tips we give here are:
- Carefully read the information sent by the panel. E.g. length of the presentation and Q+A varies from panel to panel and from year to year.
- Map the fields of the panel members so you can generate a tailor-made experience. ERC does not provide a list of panel members, but have a look at the panel of two years ago. Panels rotate on a two-years cycle.
- Balance between what works for the panel members, and what works for you. Demonstrated enthusiasm is an important selling point.
- Be aware of biases in human thinking. Panel members might miss basic knowledge in your field, they have to decide between equally excellent apples and peers and often deviate from rational thinking.
- Do not solely focus on getting the grant, there are things outside your control influencing the outcome. Rather focus on those things you can influence. Looking back without regret is a goal to strive for.
